• What is photoluminescence?

  • Photoluminescence is a process in which a substance absorbs electromagnetic radiation and then re-radiates it.

• How do the photoluminescent pigments work?

  • Lightlead photoluminescent pigments (commonly called “glow-in-the-dark”) has the ability to absorb light (sunlight, fluorescent, incandescent,etc) and then to emit it. High-energy source is converted into a lower energy source of light in the dark.When ambient darkness occurs, it becomes highly visible, lasting more than 10 hours (depending on the type of pigment). Photoluminescent pigments are non-radioactive and non-toxic.

• Do the photoluminescent pigments consist of the phosphorus?

  • No, the photoluminescent pigments do not consist of the phosphorus.

• Do the photoluminescent pigments glow in the UV light?

  • Yes, the photoluminescent pigments glow in the UV light.

• How is glow-in-the-dark paint produced?

  • Luminescent (glow-in-the-dark) paint is produced by mixing photoluminescent pigments with suitable clear inks, varnishes or paints and adding sediment-free agent (see more at Pigments/ Luminescent paints).

• What are suitable clear inks, varnishes and paints for making luminescent paints?

  • Suitable clear inks, varnishes and paints are these that are clear or transparent and thick enough to sustain the weight of the pigment particles. They can also be water based, solvent based and more. The type of ink, varnish or paint you choose should suit the material you are going to apply on. It should also meet the requirements of your application method.

• What is the mixing ratio of pigment and varnish/paints when producing luminescent paints?

  • Decide dosage in accordance with the desired brightness and emitting duration. It is recommended to make the portion 15%-50%. The optimal match should be 30%. The more pigment you add to the mixture, the brighter the glow would be, but the end result would be a coarse thick paint. You can achieve the same brightness in glow by either painting one coat of thick paint or a few coats of thin paint.

• Are the photoluminescent pigments toxic or radioactive?

  • Photoluminescent pigments are non toxic and non radioactive. It is safe for general use. But care must be taken when handling it. Wear gloves and wash with water if comes in contact with skin.

• How long do the luminance of photoluminance pigments last?

• Where are photoluminescent pigments used?

  • Photoluminescent pigments can be used for many safety applications: life saving equipment identification, fire safety signs, escape route marking, low location illumination.

    Besides, these pigments have already been successfully applied in the following sectors: hospitals, archives, marine, navy, industrial, interior decoration, silk-screen printing, etc.

  • No, these pigments are not edible, not used in alimentary products. You should consult a doctor if this is swallowed.
